The question

How should one deal with a fiancée with whom the marriage contract has been solemnized but consummation has not yet occurred, given recurring disagreements, her declining commitment to religious matters and to developing her Arabic language, the fiancé’s feeling of aversion and difficulty in communication, and fears of informing the family or dissolving the contract due to the potential embarrassment or harm it might cause the other party?

The answer

Satan casts whisperings and doubts to cause separation between a man and his wife. The marriage contract should not be dissolved due to doubts, but rather for a matter of certainty. Disagreement might be natural before consummation. Often, the apprehension of commitment causes one to focus on negative aspects. The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned against a believer disliking a believing woman, and that complete harmony occurs after marriage. It is not advisable to prolong the engagement period; rather, one should hasten to marry. Your request for your wife to read the Quran frequently and listen to lectures, and your reproach of her, is strange, as she is still young and in her parents' home. We advise you to keep your wife and hasten to complete the marriage, seeking assistance from people of knowledge and wisdom, and relying on Allah and supplicating Him. As for the mahr (dowry), if it is small, that is better. If there is no mahr at all, it is not permissible, and you must give her a mahr; because marriage without a mahr was specific to the Prophet (peace be upon him).
