Is it permissible for a girl to marry a Muslim man without the knowledge of her parents, due to her atheist father's refusal and her mother's pretext of the young man's father's ill-treatment of his two wives, while the girl fears her father might harm her mother?

For the marriage to be valid, it must be contracted by the woman's guardian (wali) or his agent, in the presence of two Muslim witnesses. If the girl's father is an atheist, he has no guardianship over her. The guardianship then transfers to the next closest Muslim male relative. If she has no Muslim guardian, the Shar'i judge or the imam of the Islamic center shall marry her. It is not permissible for the mother to allow her atheist husband sexual access to herself. The mother's rejection of the young man due to his father's ill-treatment of his wives is not a valid reason, as what matters is the young man's religiosity and character. If the girl hopes to be proposed to by another righteous young man, she should wait. However, if she has developed an attachment to him or if suitors are few, there is no harm for her to marry him without her mother's consent, while seeking to excuse her mother. It is advisable to contact an Islamic center for consultation and to investigate the young man, and to have the marriage contract officiated through them. The girl must fear Allah and adhere to the hijab (definition), and she must cut off her relationship with the young man until the legal marriage contract is concluded.
