The answer

If a man says to his wife: "You are divorced thrice," then his triple divorce takes effect according to the majority of scholars. If he says: "You are divorced, divorced," then the ruling differs according to his intention. If he intended to issue more than one divorce, they all take effect. If he intended a single divorce and repeated the word for emphasis, then only one divorce takes effect.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and those who agreed with him held the view that a divorce uttered with the word "thrice" counts as one divorce, and that successive divorces without a new marriage contract or a return (to the wife during her waiting period) count as one divorce.

Accordingly, according to the view of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, only one divorce is counted in the last instance. As for the view of the majority, the ruling differs according to his intention in the repetition.
