The answer

It is forbidden for the wife to seek divorce unless there is an excuse, such as the husband's refusal to provide for her or his immorality; otherwise, she is threatened with being deprived of the scent of Paradise. If the wife dislikes her husband and that prevents her from giving him his rights, then she may seek a khulʿ (divorce at the wife's instance) by returning the mahr (dowry). If there is a legitimate reason for divorce and the husband refuses, then the wife must consult the Islamic Center or the Sharia judge to request separation. However, lying and claiming rape or abuse to obtain a divorce is not permissible. Divorce is not valid through civil courts except with the husband's consent or through the Islamic Center or the Sharia judge.
