The question

What is the ruling on the family's unwillingness to complete the marriage after the marriage contract (aqd al-qiran) due to the discovery that the fiancé's father suffers from a mental illness, knowing that the probability of it being inherited is only 1%, and that the fiancé possesses good qualities? What is the ideal course of action in this situation?

The answer

If the marriage contract has been concluded, then it is not permissible to request annulment of the contract or divorce, and the wife must not obey her father in this matter, due to the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "Any woman who asks her husband for divorce without any [valid] reason, the scent of Paradise will be forbidden to her," and "There is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator." If it was an engagement and the contract has not been concluded, then obedience to the father is obligatory as long as the lawful contract has not been finalized, and an attempt can be made to convince the father through righteous people.
