The answer

The wife's maintenance is not incumbent upon her husband except after she surrenders herself [to him], not merely by virtue of the marriage contract, unless the guardian stipulated to the husband the payment of educational expenses and he agreed to that. If there was no such condition, and the wife moved to her husband's house, then recourse is made to custom. If custom obliges the husband to pay for the education of his wife who has not completed her studies, then it is incumbent upon him; otherwise, it is not, because obligatory maintenance pertains only to basic necessities.
