The answer

Treating the wife with kindness is a right for her and a duty upon him, and it is among the shared rights between spouses. It is not permissible for the husband to inflict physical or psychological harm upon his wife, for causing harm is forbidden, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There should be no harm nor reciprocating harm." However, it is permissible to cause some psychological distress to the woman in specific and lawful cases, such as a man marrying another wife while she is still his wife, or abandoning her in bed, or striking her with a non-painful blow to discipline her in case of her disobedience.
