The question

Is it permissible for me to prevent my wife from visiting her father for fear of her being afflicted by magic, given that this has happened to us before, and her family members are not committed [to religious practices], and her father refrains from visiting us, and my wife insists on visiting for fear of disobedience [to her father]?

The answer

A husband should help his wife honor her parents, as this entails benefits and strengthens affection. If the husband’s apprehension about his wife visiting her father is genuine and well-founded, he has the right to prevent her from doing so to avert harm from her. Her obedience to him in this matter is considered obedience in what is good, and she is not considered disobedient to her father.
