The answer

The husband must honor his mother and fulfill her rights, but he is not allowed to dominate or oppress his wife for his mother's sake. Rather, he must fulfill his wife's rights, and the husband's mother has no right to control her son's wife. The husband must protect his wife from his mother's harm without being undutiful to his mother. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Support your brother whether he is an oppressor or oppressed." Both spouses should deal wisely with problems between the wife and the husband's mother, and the wife should try to overlook the husband's mother's mistakes.
