How is the expiation for delaying the making up of 20 days of Ramadan to be rendered? What is the definition of the needy person to whom the expiation is paid? What is its amount and the type of food from which it is rendered? And must it be paid all at once?

The expiation for delaying the making up of fasts is to give out a mudd of food (approximately 750 grams) for each day. It is more cautious to give out half a saa’ (one and a half kilograms) for each day. This should be given to the poor and needy. It is permissible to give the expiation to a guard if he does not have enough to cover his essential needs and the needs of those he is obliged to support. It is sufficient to give the expiation to twenty poor people or to one poor person.
