What is the ruling on me combing my daughter's hair while I am in a state of ihram, or on using perfume for the girl?

If your daughter is in a state of ihram (definition) and you are also in a state of ihram, and you comb her hair, and some hair falls out: One to four hairs: You must give a mudd (a specific measure) of food to the needy for each hair. More than four hairs: You are required to offer a fidyah (definition) (expiation), with the choice of either fasting three days, or feeding six needy persons, or sacrificing a sheep.

If lice fall out: According to the Maliki school: If the number is less than ten, a handful of food is required. If it exceeds ten, fidyah is required. Some scholars have said: Charity is required for anything due to killing lice, whether few or many.

If your daughter is not in a state of ihram, then there is no obligation upon you for any hair or lice that fall out. However, if you apply perfume while she is not in a state of ihram, a fidyah is required from you for doing so. If she is in a state of ihram and you apply perfume with the intention of perfuming her, then two fidyahs are required from you (one for yourself and one for her), unless she is an adult and does not remove the perfume immediately, in which case a fidyah is required from her and one from you.
