Deliberate sexual intercourse during the daytime in is one of the major sins. The perpetrator must offer sincere repentance, resolve not to repeat it, and feel remorse. A compensatory expiation () is obligatory, in the following order: freeing a believing slave; if unable, then fasting for two consecutive months; if unable, then feeding sixty needy persons. This expiation is incumbent upon the husband. Scholars hold two differing opinions regarding its obligation upon the wife.
