Sexual intercourse during daylight hours in is forbidden and a major sin. It necessitates both making up the missed fast (qada') and expiation () by scholarly consensus. The expiation is to free a believing slave; if none is found, then to fast for two consecutive months; if unable, then to feed sixty poor persons. There is a difference of opinion regarding the obligation of expiation upon the compliant wife, but it is more cautious for her to also pay it.
