Breaking the fast with fresh dates (rutab), dried dates (tamr), or water is a recommended , not an obligation. A fasting person may break their fast with whatever good and permissible food they desire. It is narrated from Anas ibn Malik that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to break his fast with fresh dates before praying. If he did not find fresh dates, he would use dried dates. If he did not find dried dates, he would take a few sips of water.
