How to fast six days of Shawwal?

It is recommended to fast six days of Shawwal, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever fasts then follows it with six days from Shawwal, it is as if he has fasted for a lifetime." It is permissible to fast them consecutively or separately at any part of the month.
