The answer

It is permissible to observe voluntary fasts for one who has outstanding fasts to make up, as long as the time for making up these fasts is not running out. However, it is more virtuous to make up the Ramadan fasts during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, and it is hoped that you will be rewarded for fasting these days. But if you intend to make up a fast, do not simultaneously intend a voluntary fast, because combining intentions is not valid in such a case.
