Does using a local anesthetic during fasting for a minor abdominal surgery break the fast?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
Anesthesia does not invalidate the fast unless it extends throughout the entire day, like fainting. Local anesthesia does not break the fast. Whoever loses consciousness due to illness, medication, or a valid excuse must make up the fast but is not sinful. Whoever loses consciousness due to something forbidden, like alcohol, must make up the fast and is sinful. A surgical operation does not break the fast if it is on the outer part of the abdomen, but if it is on its inner part, it invalidates the fast and necessitates making it up.
