The question

Is it permissible for a man who broke his voluntary fast (Monday or Thursday) due to intercourse to say "yes" to his mother if she asks him: "Are you fasting?" intending to abstain from food, not a legal fast, and to conceal the intercourse? And is this considered showing off (riyaa')?

The answer

There is no harm for a person in saying "yes" to his mother when she asks about his fasting, if he intends the linguistic meaning of fasting. For in evasive remarks there is room to avoid lying, and that is not considered hypocrisy.
