The question

Was Allah Almighty unaware of the harm and hardship that would befall Muslims when applying the initial ruling of fasting before it was abrogated by the noble verse: (It has been made lawful for you the night of [the] fast [to have sexual relations with] your wives. They are a covering for you and you are a covering for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now have sexual relations with them and seek what Allah has ordained for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the night. And do not have sexual relations with them while you are secluded in the mosques. These are the limits of Allah, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His verses to the people that they may become righteous)?

The answer

Allah Almighty is characterized by absolute knowledge and perfect wisdom. Abrogation (naskh) in legal rulings has great wisdoms, among which are demonstrating the obedience of the servants, alleviating burdens upon them, and gradualism in legislation. It also plays a role in nurturing the Ummah and guiding it towards perfection. Abrogation may be from the more difficult to the less difficult, as a form of ease; or from the less difficult to the more difficult, to elevate the Ummah; or like for like, as a trial. What doctors have mentioned about the benefits of fasting is true, and Allah has not burdened the sick or the traveler with fasting. This clarifies that Allah has not burdened (anyone) with unconsciousness that may afflict some individuals.
