Muslims are afflicted by the widespread mixing of genders in many places, and it is forbidden for them to study and work in mixed environments, except in countries where mixing has become a common matter and it is difficult for a Muslim to avoid it. In such cases, it is permissible for them based on the principle that "what is forbidden as a preventative measure (sadd al-dhari'ah) becomes permissible out of necessity and for an overriding benefit." However, this permission is conditional upon attempting to find a non-mixed environment, adhering to Islamic rulings such as lowering the gaze and not being overly familiar in speech, and leaving the place if one feels their soul slipping towards the unlawful.
