The answer

It is permissible for a Muslim to accept a gift from a non-Muslim with the intention of softening his heart and encouraging him towards Islam, following the example of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Similarly, it is permissible for a Muslim to give a gift to a non-Muslim with the same intention, especially to relatives and neighbors. However, it is not permissible to give a gift to a non-Muslim on their holidays, especially if the gift is something that aids in their celebration, as this constitutes an affirmation of and participation in falsehood, and some scholars consider it disbelief. As for accepting a gift from a non-Muslim on their holiday, there is no harm in it, and it is not considered participation in the celebration. Rather, it is accepted with the intention of kindness and inviting them to Islam, provided that the gift is not from an animal slaughtered for the holiday, or something that aids in imitating them. This acceptance should also be accompanied by teaching children the doctrine of al-wala' wal-bara' (loyalty and disavowal), and the acceptance should be with the aim of conciliation and da'wah (invitation to Islam), not love. In the event of refusing an impermissible gift, the reason for the refusal should be clarified for the purpose of inviting to Islam and explaining the truth.
