What is the Islamic legal ruling on eating processed meats?

Processed meats are of two types: The first is laboratory-produced from stem cells, which is currently under experimentation. The second type is preserved or dried meats, such as mortadella and sausages. Their ruling depends on their origin: if they are from an animal that is permissible to eat and slaughtered according to Islamic law by a Muslim or a person of the الكتاب (People of the Book), then they are halal (definition) (permissible). However, if they are from a forbidden animal, such as pork, or if they are not slaughtered according to Islamic law, then they are considered maytah (definition) (carrion), and "Forbidden to you are al-maytah (dead animals), and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that which has been slaughtered as a sacrifice for other than Allah" (Al-Ma'idah/3). It must also be ensured that the processing and storage methods are hygienic and free from harm.
