The answer

If your wife is disobedient (nashiz), ill-mannered, and has weak religious commitment, you should not keep her. We advise you to refer to Islamic centers for divorce, as they act as a court. There is no objection to documenting the divorce in civil courts thereafter. The Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America has clarified that if a man divorces his wife Islamically, there is no harm in documenting it civilly, and in case of dispute, Islamic centers undertake the legal arbitration. We also draw attention to the dangers of residing in non-Muslim lands on one's religion and morals.
