The question

What is the ruling on the mixing of nursery children (from 2.5 to 6 years old) in the classroom and playing together, and the ruling on a teacher hitting a child for playing with the opposite gender, and the ruling on imposing the hijab on pre-pubescent nursery girls, especially in front of non-discerning children?

The answer

Mixed-gender education in nurseries and kindergartens is permissible. Children's play at this age is not considered reprehensible. The is obligatory for the adult Muslim woman, not for the pre-pubescent girl. Girls should be accustomed to wearing the hijab and encouraged to love it when they reach the age of desire, without harshness. The hijab is not obligatory for an adult or non-adult woman in front of a child who does not understand women's awrah (private parts). The female teacher should be gentle with children and not impose upon them what is not religiously obligatory, while observing the regulations for discipline through striking if necessary.
