What is the wisdom behind drinking while seated?
Scholars have mentioned several wisdoms for drinking while sitting, among them is achieving full hydration calmly due to the drink settling in the stomach and distributing naturally throughout the body. Ibn al-Qayyim said: "Drinking while standing has numerous disadvantages, including: it does not provide complete hydration, nor does it settle in the stomach, which may lead to cooling its warmth, disturbing it, and quickly passing to the lower body without gradual distribution. All of this harms the drinker if done continuously. However, if done rarely or out of necessity, it does not harm." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade drinking while standing, a prohibition not for prohibition (tahrim) but for guidance and preferring what is better (afdal). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did drink while standing to demonstrate the ruling or out of necessity.
