What is the ruling on selling and caging birds within the boundaries of the Haram?

It is not permissible to keep birds within the boundaries of the Haram (definition), nor to sell them. This includes prohibiting hunting, maintaining hunted animals, and selling them. If game is brought from outside the Haram, some jurists stipulate that it must be released. Jurists have agreed that the sanctity of hunting in the Haram applies to both the pilgrim (muhrim) and the non-pilgrim (halal (definition)), and it includes harming the game, seizing it, or assisting in its hunting. The Hanafis, Malikis, and Hanbalis are of the view that if someone owns game in the non-sacred territory (حل) and wishes to enter the Haram with it, they are obligated to remove it and release it. As for the Shafi'is, they said: If a non-pilgrim brings game that he owns into the Haram, he may keep it and dispose of it as he wishes because it is game from the non-sacred territory.
