The answer

It is not permissible to eat non- meat except for the one in dire necessity. Therefore, what is slaughtered by someone not adhering to a heavenly religion, or slaughtered in an un-Shar'i manner like stunning or strangling, is not permissible to eat. The basic principle concerning slaughtered animals is prohibition until their permissibility is known. If "halal" is written on the meat, but it is known that it is not, that does not change its ruling. And if one doubts the method of slaughter or if it is prevalent among the people of a country that they kill and do not slaughter, then it is not permissible for him to eat until he ascertains its permissibility. If it is widely known that the meats displayed in the markets of a certain country are not slaughtered according to , or that the one undertaking the slaughter is not from the People of the Book, then it is obligatory to be cautious and refrain from eating them.
