What is the ruling on using or keeping vessels with gilded edges, and must they be disposed of?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
It is not permissible to keep or use utensils made of gold or silver, or plated with them, even if the plating is only on their edges, whether for eating, drinking, or other purposes. The proof for this is the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibition of drinking from vessels of gold and silver, and his severe warning to whoever does so, stating that "He who drinks in a silver vessel is only gargling the fire of Hell in his belly." This includes vessels plated with gold or silver as well. These vessels can be disposed of by returning them to the seller, or by removing the gold from them and using it for adornment or selling it.
