Is it permissible to take out a loan to perform the Hajj pilgrimage?

There is no obligation to seek out funds for Hajj or to borrow money for it. Rather, Hajj becomes obligatory upon a Muslim if they possess sufficient funds for their basic expenses and those whose maintenance is incumbent upon them, and they have the physical ability, as Allah (the Most High) says: (And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka’bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence)). The ability (istita'ah) is the cause for its obligation, and a Muslim is not required to acquire this cause. It is permissible to borrow for Hajj if it is a good loan (qard hasan (definition)), but if it is an interest-bearing loan (ribawi), then it is a great sin.
