A person who performed Hajj al-, and circumambulated the al-qudum and performed the sa'i, then after Arafat and Muzdalifa and completing the stoning rituals, performed the farewell tawaf and departed, must return to Mecca to perform the tawaf al-ifadah because it is a pillar without which Hajj is not valid. He is not permitted to approach his wife until after performing it. There is a consensus that no expiation () can substitute for it. Whoever has not performed it remains in a state of until he does so. He must return to Mecca in a state of ihram when he is able to complete his Hajj.
