Is it permissible for a girl to communicate with foreign men for the purpose of language development and understanding their perspective on Islam, or to communicate with young men to discuss academic matters, given the possibility of these conversations deviating from the original purpose into ordinary conversations?

The Islamic religion strives to preserve society and virtue, and therefore it has set restrictions to regulate the relationship between men and women, in order to avoid fitnah (temptation/strife). As narrated in the Hadith (definition): "Beware of the world, and beware of women, for the first fitnah among the Children of Israel was concerning women." Conversation between a man and a non-mahram (definition) woman is an opening to corruption, and for this reason, scholars are strict about it. If the conversation is for a need and within Sharia (definition)-compliant controls, there is no harm. However, expanding it for the purpose of getting acquainted and the like is not permissible, because Satan may exploit it and lead to undesirable matters, as Allah Almighty says: "O you who have believed, do not follow the footsteps of Satan. And whoever follows the footsteps of Satan - indeed, he enjoins immorality and wrongdoing." And in inviting people to Islam, it is preferable for each gender to invite people of their own gender.
