How sound and what is the meaning of the Hadith: "The majority of the hypocrites of my Ummah are its reciters (qurra')," and is there a dispute among Hadith scholars regarding its authentication and weakening?

Imam Ahmad narrated this hadith (definition) in his Musnad and others from Abdullah ibn Amr, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Most of the hypocrites of my Ummah are its reciters." Al-Busiri graded its chain of narration as hasan (definition) (good), and Ahmad Shakir, Al-Albani, and Shu'ayb Al-Arna'ut authenticated it based on its combined طرق (paths of transmission), while Al-Haythami weakened Al-Tabarani's path. The meaning of the hadith, as Al-Manawi stated, is that the reciters (qurra') referred to are those who interpret the Qur'an incorrectly, or memorize it out of dissimulation (taqiyya), or that the hypocrisy (nifaq) meant here is ostentation (riya'). Both the hypocrite and the ostentatious person display the opposite of what they conceal. Al-Ghazali intended to warn against four traits that particularly afflict reciters: excessive hope, haste, arrogance, and envy.
