What is a garment of fame, and does it include expensive wedding dresses and celebration attire?

The garment of fame (thawb ash-shuhra) is what a person wears to become famous among people, and it deviates from the usual custom of clothing, whether it is excessively extravagant or excessively humble. A wedding dress is not considered a garment of fame because it is customary among people and their traditions. As for its high price, one must observe custom and avoid extravagance or wastefulness, while also observing modesty and covering. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Eat, give charity, and wear (clothes) without extravagance or arrogance."
