The answer

A fourth condition for repentance from a sin related to the rights of a human being is to seek absolution from the person whose right was violated. If the right is something that can be recovered, such as money, it must be returned to its owner. If it is something that cannot be recovered, such as backbiting (gheeba) and slander (nameema), then the schools of thought of Ash-Shafi'i, Abu Hanifa, and Malik hold that one must seek absolution from the wronged person. However, the preferred view is that of Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Al-Qayyim, which is to suffice with supplicating for the wronged person, seeking forgiveness, speaking well of them, and not informing them, because informing them would cause harm and no benefit.
