The question

Is the expiation of the gathering sufficient to atone for backbiting that occurred, or is it necessary to seek forgiveness from the one who was backbitten, and what should one do if they heard backbiting but do not know the person who was backbitten?

The answer

You are obligated to repent and seek forgiveness for your inaction in not denouncing it. The mere recitation of the supplication for the atonement of a gathering is not sufficient for this sin.
