Is it permissible to abort a fetus after it has exceeded five months of age, given that the doctor stated the fetus is ill and described its condition as having undefined bones in the head, and that the mother suffers from chronic anemia? And is it permissible to ascertain whether the fetus is female or male?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
Scholars have unanimously agreed on the impermissibility of abortion if the fetus has completed 120 days and the soul has been breathed into it, unless the continuation of the pregnancy poses a definite danger to the mother's life, and there is no other way to save her life except abortion. It is not permissible to abort a fetus because it is sick or deformed as long as it is alive.
