Is it permissible to give zakat to a man in hardship whose wife has cancer, and he is a relative?
The (school of thought) of the majority of scholars is that the husband is not obligated to provide for his wife's medical treatment. Therefore, if the woman does not find enough to cover her medical expenses, and her relatives who are obligated to support her are unable to pay, then it is permissible to give her for this purpose. It is also permissible for her to authorize her husband to receive it and spend it on her treatment.
As for the husband, he does not own zakat money unless he is among the poor who are eligible for it. However, if we say that he is obligated to provide for his wife's medical treatment (which is the view of Ibn Abd al-Hakam from the Malikis), then it is permissible to give him zakat in this case.
