A husband must provide for his wife and children adequately regarding food, clothing, and housing, taking into account the financial status of both spouses, whether affluent or in hardship. He is not obligated to give them extra expenses if he has already provided what is due. As for the wife's medical treatment, there is a difference of opinion among scholars, but the husband should undertake it as an act of kindness. A wife's salary is her exclusive right, and the husband is not permitted to his duties on the pretext of her wealth; if she helps him, that is a good deed.
