The answer

Religiously, a husband is obligated to spend on his wife in a reasonable manner. This includes housing, food, drink, clothing, and, according to the preponderant opinion, medical treatment and medicine. Our evidence for this is the Almighty's saying: "Lodge them where you lodge, according to your means, and do not harm them to make their lives difficult," and His saying: "And upon the father is their sustenance and their clothing according to what is reasonable." And the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "And they have a right upon you for their sustenance and their clothing according to what is reasonable." If the husband fulfills this, then his obligation is discharged, and he is not required to provide anything beyond that, such as luxuries or a special allowance, unless he willingly chooses to do so. The husband should remember the virtue of being generous to his family and that spending on them is a charity for which he will be rewarded.
