Is zakat (the tithe) obligatory on vegetables and fruits prepared for personal use?

Zakat (definition) is not obligatory on vegetables and fruits that are not measured or stored, such as pomegranates, figs, peaches, tomatoes, and cucumbers, because they spoil if stored. Zakat is obligatory on fruits that are measured and and stored, such as dates, raisins, almonds, and pistachios. Prophetic hadiths and the actions of the Caliphs indicate that Zakat is not obligatory on vegetables. If the garden is for personal use, there is no Zakat on it. However, if it is for trade, Zakat is obligatory on the profit if a hawl (lunar year) has passed on it.
