The answer

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not intend a battle in the Battle of Badr. Rather, he and his Companions went out to reclaim their financial rights from the trade caravans of Quraish, as stated in His, the Almighty's, saying: "As your Lord brought you out of your home with the truth, though indeed, a party of the believers disliked it. They disputed with you concerning the truth after it had become clear, as if they were being driven to death while they were looking on. And [remember] when Allah promised you one of the two groups - that it would be yours - and you wished that the one with the material might would be yours. But Allah intended to establish the truth by His words and eliminate the disbelievers to the last." When the caravan escaped, Quraish mobilized its forces to fight the Muslims, but Allah thwarted their plot.
