Insurance contracts are a recent development and are of two types: cooperative insurance, which is based on donations and mutual cooperation in righteousness, and is permissible. The second type is fixed-premium (commercial) insurance, which is a probabilistic exchange contract marred by (uncertainty), Riba (usury), and Qimar (gambling), and leads to neglecting wealth and a lack of reliance on Allah. For this reason, Fiqh councils have unanimously ruled it unlawful, with the exception of cooperative insurance.
