Is it permissible for me to own shares in a foreign software company, some of whose divisions work with the military, and whose financing involves usurious borrowing, knowing that I will acquire the shares as a gift for a small amount, and their value will increase if the company is sold or floated on the stock market?

A Muslim is commanded to seek what is lawful in their earnings and work. Therefore, it is not permissible to purchase shares of companies that deal with usury, whether lending or borrowing, because a share represents an undivided portion of the company's capital, and the shareholder owns an undivided stake in its assets. So, whatever the company lends with interest or borrows with interest, the shareholder has a portion of it. Authorizing an unlawful act is not permissible. Consequently, it is not permissible to purchase shares of such a company, even if the price is reduced. However, working for the company in what is permissible is not objectionable.
