The image of the contract is unclear, but the questioner was correct in refusing to increase the debt in return for extending the term, because that is explicit usury which God has forbidden in His saying: {O you who have believed, do not consume usury, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful.}[3:130] And it is the usury of the pre-Islamic era. The debtor must pay his debt on time, and it is not permissible for him to procrastinate while being able, and the insolvent person is given respite until he is able to pay. And it is recommended to give charity to him or relinquish something of the debt.
