Is it permissible to sell an oud to pay off a debt when no other money is available?

The majority of scholars hold that it is impermissible to sell 'ouds (lutes) and other prohibited musical instruments, due to the prohibition of their use. Anything whose use is prohibited is also prohibited to sell. One of the conditions for a valid sale is that the item sold must have a permissible benefit without need. Islam does not permit the sale of the 'oud; rather, it is obligatory to destroy it.
