What is the ruling on selling musical instruments, and is it permissible to use the capital from their sale in another business and then donate it as charity?

The sale of musical instruments is forbidden according to the majority of jurists. If they are sold and their price is received, this price may not be used in trade or otherwise. It must be disposed of by spending it on the welfare of Muslims, unless the seller is poor and cannot find what to spend on himself, in which case he is permitted to take from it only what suffices his need. Investing the price of these forbidden instruments in trade is not permissible.
