Am I obligated to attend congregational prayers at the mosque if it is 40 minutes away from home, the weather is cold, and I cannot hear the call to prayer, knowing that I pray with my brother at home?

If the mosque is far away, and the adhan (definition) cannot be heard, and the weather is very cold, these are excuses for not attending congregational prayer at the mosque. Performing congregational prayer with one's brother is obligatory according to some scholars, based on the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "When the time for prayer comes, let one of you call the adhan, and let the oldest among you lead you in prayer." The leadership of the congregational prayer should be given to the one who recites the Book of Allah best; if they are equal in recitation, then the one most knowledgeable of the Sunnah (definition); if they are equal in knowledge of the Sunnah, then the one who migrated earliest; if they are equal in migration, then the one who embraced Islam earliest or is oldest in age.
