How do we understand the established virtue of congregational prayer (Salat al-Jama'ah) alongside the validity of an individual's prayer, and is one who is capable of congregational prayer sinful if he prays alone?

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah held the view that congregational prayer is a condition for the validity of the prayer for anyone who abandons it without a valid excuse. He cited the hadith (definition) that favors congregational prayer over the prayer of an individual, clarifying that this favor applies to those with an excuse. He also analogized abandoning the congregation to the deficiency in a woman's religious practice when she abstains from prayer during menstruation.

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen, however, refuted this view, emphasizing its weakness. He clarified that the superiority mentioned in the hadith indicates that the prayer of an individual is valid, and that which is invalid has no merit. He also cited the hadith, "If a servant falls ill or travels, what he used to do when he was a resident and healthy will be recorded for him," as evidence that whoever abandons an act of obedience due to an excuse will have its reward recorded for him.

The correct view according to the majority of scholars is that the prayer of an individual is valid, but he is sinful for abandoning the obligatory congregation. It is not valid to analogize it to abandoning the first tashahhud (definition) or the obligatory takbirat in prayer.
