How can a person regain the feeling of faith and the sweetness of obedience after a period of disconnection and misguidance, knowing that he has repented and performs acts of worship, but his heart does not feel faith as it used to?
Sins and transgressions weaken faith and cause one to lose its sweetness. Due to them, the transgressor finds a desolation between himself and Allah that the pleasures of this world cannot compensate. Whoever feels this desolation should hasten to repent and ask Allah to protect his heart and instill in it the sweetness of faith. To maintain the health of the heart and find the sweetness of faith, one must acquire much beneficial knowledge and perform righteous deeds, be diligent in supplication during times of responsiveness, such as the pre-dawn hours, between the Athan and , and while prostrating. One should also seek forgiveness, maintain regular remembrance of Allah (), fulfill obligatory duties, especially the five daily prayers, frequently say "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah" (There is no might or power except with Allah), and be patient and persistent in supplication without haste for a response.
