The answer

I'tikaf (spiritual retreat) is only valid in mosques, based on the Almighty's saying: (And do not have sexual relations with them while you are in i'tikaf in the mosques). Ibn al-Mundhir transmitted the consensus that i'tikaf can only take place therein, and that the "sexual relations" mentioned in the verse refer to intercourse. This is the view held by jurists such as Ibn Qudamah, Al-Nawawi, and Ibn 'Uthaymeen, who affirmed that i'tikaf is not valid anywhere other than mosques, nor in house prayer rooms or Islamic centers.
